For more than fifty years, Australia and Japan have built one of the Indo-Pacific's most important energy partnerships. As both countries pursue ambitious decarbonisation and energy security objectives, the focus is rapidly shifting from policy ambition to project delivery, investment and commercial execution.
The ANZCCJ Sustainability Committee in partnership with the Ashurst, ANZ and Endgame Analytics invites members and guests to Powering the Next 50 Years: Australia, Japan & the Future of Energy Security on Wednesday, 7 October 2026 at the Conrad Tokyo.
Bringing together senior leaders from government, industry, finance and academia, the discussion will examine where the next generation of Australia–Japan energy opportunities are emerging, the barriers to commercial deployment, and how both countries can work together to finance, build and scale the infrastructure needed to deliver long-term energy security, industrial competitiveness and decarbonisation.
Drawing on recent research from the Net Zero Institute, speakers will explore the concept of an Asia-Pacific Super Energy Highway - a proposed network of renewable electricity, hydrogen, critical minerals and low-emissions industrial supply chains connecting Australia with the broader region - and what it could mean for future investment and regional energy markets.
Discussion topics include:
- The future of the Australia–Japan energy partnership in a decarbonising world
- The Asia-Pacific Super Energy Highway and its implications for regional energy markets
- Renewable electricity exports, HVDC transmission and new cross-border energy links
- Hydrogen and ammonia: scaling commercially viable low-carbon supply chains
- Critical minerals, supply chain resilience and industrial competitiveness
- Certification frameworks, carbon accounting and standards harmonisation
- Financing large-scale energy infrastructure and attracting long-term capital

Australia and Japan have long shared one of the region's most significant strategic and investment partnerships. As critical minerals become increasingly important to the global energy transition, Japanese investors, financiers and government stakeholders continue to play a pivotal role in supporting exploration, project development, processing, downstream investment and strategic offtake arrangements across Australia's critical minerals sector.
Against a backdrop of evolving regulation, geopolitical considerations and increasing capital requirements, investors are navigating a rapidly changing landscape while balancing security of supply, regulatory risk and long-term value creation.
The ANZCCJ Sustainability Committee - in partnership with Ashurst Perkins Coie - are pleased to invite you to an exclusive roundtable bringing together a select group of senior commercial and legal professionals leading Australia-Japan critical minerals transactions for a candid discussion on the legal, regulatory and commercial issues shaping Japanese investment into Australia's critical minerals sector.
The discussion will focus on issues including:
- The outlook for Japanese investment in Australia's critical minerals sector.
- Evolving investment structures, including minority investments, joint ventures, strategic alliances and integrated offtake arrangements.
- FIRB, national interest and national security considerations in critical minerals investment.
- Government policy developments in Australia, Japan and other key jurisdictions influencing investment decisions.
- Access to tenure, project approvals and development pathways.
- First Nations partnerships and community engagement as drivers of project certainty and long-term value creation.
- ESG, sustainability and supply chain considerations influencing investment decisions.
- Funding strategies for capital-intensive projects, including project finance and government support.
- Lessons from recent Australia–Japan critical minerals transactions and strategic partnerships.
Ashurst Perkins Coie will chair the discussion, drawing on the collective experience of participants to explore practical approaches, emerging market trends and lessons from recent projects and transactions. Rather than formal presentations, the session will be highly interactive, encouraging an open exchange of perspectives among peers.
Limited to a small group, the session is designed to encourage an open exchange of perspectives among peers in a confidential setting. As places are limited, we encourage you to confirm your attendance at your earliest convenience.
We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a timely and engaging discussion.

- Acting as MC or moderator at events, particularly those related to the Committee with which the council member is affiliated.
- Overseeing the Secretariat’s management of the ANZCCJ’s operations.
