- Market Overview & State-by-State Breakdown - Vacancy rates, leasing trends and economic drivers across Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane
- New Supply, Refurbishments & Future Forecasts - Major development pipelines and co-investment opportunities

For more than fifty years, Australia and Japan have built one of the Indo-Pacific's most important energy partnerships. As both countries pursue ambitious decarbonisation and energy security objectives, the focus is rapidly shifting from policy ambition to project delivery, investment and commercial execution.
The ANZCCJ Sustainability Committee in partnership with the Ashurst, ANZ and Endgame Analytics invites members and guests to Powering the Next 50 Years: Australia, Japan & the Future of Energy Security on Wednesday, 7 October 2026 at the Conrad Tokyo.
Bringing together senior leaders from government, industry, finance and academia, the discussion will examine where the next generation of Australia–Japan energy opportunities are emerging, the barriers to commercial deployment, and how both countries can work together to finance, build and scale the infrastructure needed to deliver long-term energy security, industrial competitiveness and decarbonisation.
Drawing on recent research from the Net Zero Institute, speakers will explore the concept of an Asia-Pacific Super Energy Highway - a proposed network of renewable electricity, hydrogen, critical minerals and low-emissions industrial supply chains connecting Australia with the broader region - and what it could mean for future investment and regional energy markets.
Discussion topics include:
- The future of the Australia–Japan energy partnership in a decarbonising world
- The Asia-Pacific Super Energy Highway and its implications for regional energy markets
- Renewable electricity exports, HVDC transmission and new cross-border energy links
- Hydrogen and ammonia: scaling commercially viable low-carbon supply chains
- Critical minerals, supply chain resilience and industrial competitiveness
- Certification frameworks, carbon accounting and standards harmonisation
- Financing large-scale energy infrastructure and attracting long-term capital

Australia and Japan have long shared one of the region's most significant strategic and investment partnerships. As critical minerals become increasingly important to the global energy transition, Japanese investors, financiers and government stakeholders continue to play a pivotal role in supporting exploration, project development, processing, downstream investment and strategic offtake arrangements across Australia's critical minerals sector.
Against a backdrop of evolving regulation, geopolitical considerations and increasing capital requirements, investors are navigating a rapidly changing landscape while balancing security of supply, regulatory risk and long-term value creation.
The ANZCCJ Sustainability Committee - in partnership with Ashurst Perkins Coie - are pleased to invite you to an exclusive roundtable bringing together a select group of senior commercial and legal professionals leading Australia-Japan critical minerals transactions for a candid discussion on the legal, regulatory and commercial issues shaping Japanese investment into Australia's critical minerals sector.
The discussion will focus on issues including:
- The outlook for Japanese investment in Australia's critical minerals sector.
- Evolving investment structures, including minority investments, joint ventures, strategic alliances and integrated offtake arrangements.
- FIRB, national interest and national security considerations in critical minerals investment.
- Government policy developments in Australia, Japan and other key jurisdictions influencing investment decisions.
- Access to tenure, project approvals and development pathways.
- First Nations partnerships and community engagement as drivers of project certainty and long-term value creation.
- ESG, sustainability and supply chain considerations influencing investment decisions.
- Funding strategies for capital-intensive projects, including project finance and government support.
- Lessons from recent Australia–Japan critical minerals transactions and strategic partnerships.
Ashurst Perkins Coie will chair the discussion, drawing on the collective experience of participants to explore practical approaches, emerging market trends and lessons from recent projects and transactions. Rather than formal presentations, the session will be highly interactive, encouraging an open exchange of perspectives among peers.
Limited to a small group, the session is designed to encourage an open exchange of perspectives among peers in a confidential setting. As places are limited, we encourage you to confirm your attendance at your earliest convenience.
We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a timely and engaging discussion.

HYDROGEN ECONOMICS: Opportunities in Australia and Japan,
the outlook for powering our green tomorrow
Developments in policy, technology and economics are driving a huge global interest in hydrogen & ammonia. Australia has recently ramped up its support for hydrogen with the “Hydrogen Headstart Program” – largely in response to the competition from the US’s Inflation Reduction Act. As a fuel, hydrogen offers a way to eliminate emissions from sectors of the economy that are hardest to decarbonise, as well as to provide much needed inter-seasonal storage in energy systems with high levels of variable renewable power generation. Consequently, hydrogen is likely to be a vital piece in the Net Zero puzzle.
ANZCCJ in collaboration with Aurora Energy Research invite members and guests to join us on 9 June 2023 for a panel discussion on the enormous opportunities and requirements for Australia and Japan to partner on the future of hydrogen in the decarbonization march towards Net Zero targets.
The panel will delve into Australia's hydrogen landscape including the impact of recent budget announcements along with a deep dive analysis on the economics across key APAC regions including i) drivers of demand for hydrogen and its chemical products across APAC, including how this is expected to evolve over the coming decades; ii) comparisons of production and delivery costs from potential export regions (Australia, the USA, Chile and the UAE) to Japan; and iii) how an emerging hydrogen industry is going to impact power markets and renewable economics.
Speakers include:
- HE Justin Hayhurst - Australian Ambassador to Japan
- Rowan von Spreckelsen - Head of Research - APAC, Aurora Energy Research
- Edit Mucsi - Director, Minerals and Energy Sector, Department for Trade and Investment South Australia
- Martin Stollberg, Investment Director, Austrade

From Japan we watched with heartbreak as cyclone Gabrielle and the subsequent flooding wreaked devastation across New Zealand. To date, 11 people have lost their lives, approximately 1,500 homes have suffered damage, and several thousand people have been displaced along the east coast of the North Island. Local communities have been greatly impacted and will continue to suffer for years to come with businesses, farms, factories, and vineyards -including those with trading relationships with Japan – having been destroyed.
We want the people of Gisborne and the surrounding areas to know that they are not forgotten, and we are with them. To help in our own small way, the ANZCCJ is proud to support a flood relief fundraiser event for SuperGrans Tairawhiti Trust a longstanding registered charity operating across Gisborne and the East Coast region. The incredible organisation has been providing grass roots support of meals, emergency care and essential resources to people who have been directly displaced. On an ongoing basis, SuperGrans whanau (extended family) mentors will continue to share their knowledge and skills with people in their communities based on the concept of kaitiaki mentoring (the sharing of generational knowledge).
A team of people in Japan with connections to New Zealand have come together to host this event which will include an auction of generously donated gifts and experiences from individuals and businesses across Japan and New Zealand. The individuals involved are connected with the organisations listed in the sponsors and partners section below. All profits from ticket sales and proceeds from the auction will go directly to SuperGrans.

Internationally renowned best-selling author and scholar, Dr Kate Kitagawa, Director, Space Education Office at JAXA, will join Ms Janine Pitt, the Australian Government’s Education and Research Counsellor in Japan, for a “fireside chat” where we will hear about Dr Kitagawa’s exceptional life story, why she was selected as one of the 100 most influential people in Japan and how she is travelling the world, getting young people excited about space and encouraging the next generation of female leaders in this field. Dr Kitagawa is an inspirational and engaging speaker and will no doubt inspire us to follow in her footsteps and recognise our responsibilities to do our bit for gender equality. With the 2023 theme of “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”, we are delighted to welcome these two senior leaders who will highlight the need to address the issues around digital education, such as the risk of perpetuating existing patterns of gender inequality, and how female participation in innovation and technology is crucial for a sustainable future too. This will be a wonderful event and we hope you can join us!
